Here is how to get the real number, and what it costs on the rate plan you are actually on in 2026.
How many watts does a refrigerator use?
A modern full-size refrigerator uses 100 to 250 watts while the compressor is running, and close to nothing between cycles. There are three different wattage numbers, and mixing them up is why so many estimates are wrong:
- Nameplate (rated) watts: volts times amps from the sticker inside the door. Often 300 to 800 watts. This is a ceiling for sizing a circuit, not what the fridge averages.
- Running watts: what the compressor actually draws once it is going. Usually 100 to 250 watts on a newer fridge.
- Startup watts: a brief spike when an older, fixed-speed compressor kicks on, several times the running watts for under a second. Newer inverter compressors ramp up gently and barely spike.

How many kWh does a refrigerator use per day?
A typical new full-size refrigerator uses about 0.8 to 1.6 kWh per day. Take the yearly kWh from the yellow EnergyGuide label and divide by 365: a 450 kWh fridge averages 1.23 kWh a day.
A correction worth making out loud, because the earlier version of this page made the same mistake most sites make. Multiplying a 400 watt nameplate by 8 hours of runtime gives 3.2 kWh a day, or 1,168 kWh a year. That is roughly double what most new fridges are certified to use. The nameplate is a peak, and the compressor rarely runs at that peak. Start from the label, not the sticker.
Real-world use does run above the label in two situations common in California: a hot kitchen or garage in an inland summer, and a fridge with dusty coils or a tired door gasket.
How much does it cost to run a refrigerator in California?

Does a time-of-use plan make a refrigerator more expensive?
Slightly, yes. A fridge is the one load you cannot shift out of the 4 to 9 p.m. peak. On SCE’s TOU-D-4-9PM plan, summer weekday electricity is 34 cents off-peak and 58 cents from 4 to 9 p.m. A fridge drawing the same power around the clock works out to about 38 cents per kWh averaged across a summer week, before SCE’s 10 cent baseline credit. In practice it is a little worse, because the compressor works hardest on hot evenings, exactly when the price is highest.
That is the everyday version of the argument for a home battery under California’s current rules: the battery covers the loads you cannot move, like the fridge, during the expensive hours.
Is it worth replacing an old refrigerator in California?
Often, yes, if the old one is 15+ years old and runs year-round. Replacing a 1,000 kWh fridge with a 450 kWh model saves about $185 a year on PG&E, $189 on SCE and $250 on SDG&E. A $1,200 replacement pays for itself in roughly 5 to 6.5 years on electricity alone.
ENERGY STAR notes that certified refrigerators are about 9% more efficient than the federal minimum, and that fridges over 15 years old cost noticeably more to run. Federal standards are also scheduled to tighten again: the U.S. Department of Energy’s refrigerator rule sets compliance dates of January 31, 2029 or 2030 depending on configuration, with an estimated 11% savings versus models on the market when the rule was written. DOE is currently revisiting how it sets appliance standards, so treat those dates as scheduled rather than certain.
The garage fridge problem
The most expensive refrigerator in many California homes is the old one in the garage. Garages in Fresno, Riverside and the Inland Empire routinely sit above 100°F in summer. A fridge sitting in that heat runs its compressor far longer than it did in a lab, and an older unit with worn seals can easily land in the 1,000+ kWh range. If you only need it for parties, unplug it the rest of the year. If you need it daily, move it indoors or replace it with a garage-ready model.
How many solar panels does it take to run a refrigerator?
About one panel. A 450 kWh fridge needs roughly 0.3 kW of solar, and a single 430 watt panel produces about 600 to 775 kWh a year on a good California roof, based on the production figures in our 5kW system output guide.
The catch is timing. That panel makes its power at midday, and your fridge runs all night too. Under California’s Net Billing Tariff (NEM 3.0), solar you export at noon earns a small credit, roughly 5 to 8 cents per kWh on average, while the power you buy back at 7 p.m. can cost 45 cents or more. So “one panel covers the fridge” is true on paper, and only partly true on your bill unless a battery carries the evening hours. How long can a home battery run a refrigerator during a power outage?
A single 13.5 kWh battery such as the Tesla Powerwall 3 could run a modern fridge for about a week on its own, since the fridge uses around 1.2 to 2 kWh a day. Real outages are different, because you also want lights, internet and phone charging. With solar recharging the battery each day, the fridge can run through a multi-day Public Safety Power Shutoff indefinitely.

How do I find out exactly how many watts my refrigerator uses?
Read the yearly kWh on the EnergyGuide label, then confirm it with a plug-in meter over a full week. Four ways, from easiest to most accurate:
- EnergyGuide label or spec sheet: search your model number for the yearly kWh figure.
- Nameplate: volts x amps inside the door gives the maximum, useful for circuits, not for bills.
- Plug-in watt meter: leave it on for 7 days and divide the kWh by 7. One day is not enough, because defrost cycles skew short readings.
- Your utility’s hourly data: PG&E, SCE and SDG&E smart meters show hourly usage in your online account. Your overnight baseline, when little else is running, is mostly your fridge, freezer and always-on devices.
How can I lower my refrigerator’s energy use?
Set the right temperatures, keep the coils clean and keep the door seal tight. Most households can trim 10% or more without buying anything.
- Keep the fridge at 37 to 40°F and the freezer at 0°F. Colder than that wastes energy without keeping food safer.
- Vacuum the condenser coils once or twice a year, more often with pets.
- Test the door gasket by closing it on a dollar bill. If the bill slides out easily, replace the gasket.
